Hoorn

Hoorn is not only known for its important position for the VOC, but was also an important city in times of cheese trade. Hoorn’s cheese market was once the most important cheese trading center in all of North Holland. Especially after 1650, the cheese trade was a flourishing business. The central square of Hoorn, the “Roode Steen”, was then even officially named after the cheese market. The cheese was weighed in “de Waag”. A building that you can still find on this spot today. In the period from June 18 to August 27, you can visit the cheese market in Hoorn every Tuesday. Enjoy folk dancing, the cheese carrier and of course the Hoorn Cheese Market.
