Schiphol airport will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016! In 1916 the airport was built at the bottom of the drained Haarlemmermeer, 4 meters below sea level. It was then used as a military airport in World War I and used by the Germans as a base for their attacks on England in World War II. After the war, the airport grew substantially starting in the 1970s.
